Can-Am – Renegade 800R
IF YOU,RE LOOKING FOR THE looking for the ultimate in ATV crossover technology, the Renegade 800R is a hard machine to ignore. A blend of “utility quad meets sport quad performance,” the Renegade 800R is one of the most unique machines on the market. At its heart is an 800cc V-twin Rotax engine, which is the most powerful engine in its class (for 2009, the Renegade R gets a nine-percent bump in horsepower thanks to some internal engine mods). Like its 4×4 Outlander cousin, the Renegade 800R comes with a SST (Surrounding Spar Technology) frame and it also has the same CVT transmission that features high, low, park, neutral, and reverse (with standard engine braking), but it has been tuned for sport riding applications. It also has selectable 2WD/4WD with a Visco-Lok front differential, as well. While the machine may share many of the same features as the 4×4 utility machine it’s based on, it’s a whopping 50 pounds lighter.
The Renegade 800R comes with RS-Type double A-arm front suspension and RS-Type TTI trailing arm suspension, center cast aluminum wheels with ITP Holeshot ATR tires, and full floorboards with aggressive kick-up foot pegs. The machine stops thanks to independently controlled front and rear disc brakes (the rear disc is a single inboard unit), while 60-watt projector beam headlights light up the night. Topping things off is a multi-function digital gauge. New graphics and a red color option round out the changes for 2009.

Can-Am DS 450
Can-Am’s first 450-class sport quad is lightweight,powerful, and unique. Its ALTEC dual-pyramidal aluminum frame is the only one of its kind in the class (instead of being welded together like a typical frame, the ALTEC frame is “bolted” together via special rivets). Its electric start, 449cc, single-cylinder, liquidcooled,dual-overhead cam, four-valve head has a high-flow design (a 38mm intake tract coupled with a 46mm throttle body). The engine is matched up with a five-speed manual transmission with a heavy-duty nine-plate clutch.
The suspension is also unique; both the upper and lower front A-arms are made from forged aluminum and KYB HPG shocks (high pressure gas) to handle the damping action. Front suspension travel measures in at 9.5 inches. The most interesting feature in the front end is the use of narrow axles/hubs; these smaller hubs help reduce the feedback and bump steer felt through the front end. The rear of the machine uses a cast-aluminum swing arm, and a hollow chromoly axle help keep the rear end light and fast acting. Rear suspension travel comes in at 10.5 inches.
Other features include dual Wavetype brake rotors, ITP Holeshot SR tires front and rear mounted on aluminum wheels, dual removable headlights, and a heavy-duty 520 O-ring chain.

Can-Am – DS250
For riders 16 years of age and older, the DS 250 is a perfect first quad. The entry-level DS 250 sports a reliable 249cc
single-cylinder four-stroke engine with electric start. An automatic CVT transmission (with forward, neutral, and reverse) gets the power to a final chain drive, while hydraulic disc brakes can bring the machine to a quick stop if need be. Dual A-arm front suspension with 5.5-inches of travel absorbs the bumps and jumps on the trail. Rear suspension action is handled through a standard swingarm and single shock with 6.7-inches of travel. And the DS 250 is equipped with two 35-watt headlamps for when it’s dark outside.

Honda – TRX700XX
This big-bore from Honda was one of the most heavily anticipated releases in recent history. The 700XX offers a double-wishbone independent rear suspension and a very unique centered chain-drive system mated with its fuel-injected 686cc engine. It has a gear-driven counter balancer to minimize vibration and make this beast all-day comfortable. While the 700XX is still new (it’s been out for less than a year), Honda is already offering a new color scheme in metallic black.
The large single-cylinder 686cc four-stroke is potent. The power of the 700XX feels very tame, but it’s the type of power that allows a rider to ride all day with minimal fatigue and negotiate long, steep uphill climbs with no problem. To help the engine put the power out, the five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and works well. Reverse gear works very well and the lever actuator located on the front right fender is convenient to engage.
The IRS 700XX works great in rocky situations, and its ground clearance allows it to work exceptionally well in muddy, rutted terrain or in areas where fallen trees cover the trail. Also, the front and rear suspensions do a nice job of soaking up rocks, ruts, roots, and off-camber situations. Crawling over logs and rocks is easy, and the double-wishbone dual A-arm front suspension setup, with 10.5 inches of suspension travel, is ultra plush and handles small- to medium-size hits well.
The rear shocks are at their best weaving through the woods and rolling over rocks, stumps, and logs. Also, the front and rear brakes are done in typical Honda fashion–they are very resistant to fade and they work very, very well.
The 700XX is very comfortable ergonomically. It’s a large machine, checking in around 500 pounds, but the XX feels incredibly light when jumping it. In fact, in mid-air it felt more like a sport quad than a machine whose weight is approaching utility quad territory.

Honda – TRX450R and TRX450ER
The quintessential sport quad, the TRX450R, from Honda is available in manual (R) and electric start (ER) versions. The R has an ATV-type forward kick-starting mechanism, whereas the ER has an electric starter that drives the clutch side of the crankshaft to produce a narrow engine with a short crankshaft. With a mountain of usable power and great ergonomics, this machine has proved itself dependable and fast. You’ll see plenty of these on the starting line of any ATV race, and new for 2009 you’ll see some in white with an orange frame.

Honda – TRX400X
For those of you who are sporty, but maybe not racers, there’s the TRX400X. Its 397cc engine comes from the bulletproof XR400R. It has triple disc brakes for positive stopping, radial tires that are ready for the trail, and an aggressive body style that will keep it turning heads. The rear Showa piggyback shock provides 9.1 inches of travel to give you plenty of clearance for those nasty trail hazards, and the twin Showa shocks up front have five-position adjustable spring preload to really dial-in your ride.

Honda – TRX300X
The TRX300X has been a favorite for a while, and since you don’t fix what’s not broken, Honda is simply throwing a color-matched cowl into the mix for 2009. This 282cc four-stroke provides manageable power that won’t win any land-speed records, but it will give a newer rider plenty of confidence and hours and hours of fun. It has electric start, triple hydraulic brakes, a long-travel double-wishbone front suspension with five-position spring preload adjustability, and a snorkel-type air filter to keep out debris. It also features an easy-to-use reverse gear (which is invaluable for beginner riders).

Honda – TRX250X
The TRX250X is probably one of the most popular quads ever to exist. Its easy 229cc engine and two-valve cylinder head optimize performance while keeping the power curve steady. It has a hand-operated Honda SportClutch, which we think is great–it enables the rider to experience manual clutch action with the advantage of no stalling when coming to a stop. The 250X is a great beginner’s quad, but we’re not surprised when those beginners decide to keep the 250 long after they’ve learned the ropes.

Kawasaki – KFX450R
The KFX450R is designed for the rider who wants a race-ready, high-performance ATV with class-leading performance and technology right out of the crate. The KFX450R ATV engine is based on Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed KX450F motocross engine. The KFX450R engine is fed by a 32-bit digital fuel injection (DFI) system that automatically compensates for temperature and altitude changes. The DFI is also designed to generate torque in the low and medium rpm ranges for outstanding holeshot-achieving acceleration. By design, it has the ability to find traction resulting in a hooked-up feeling, improved handling, and corner speed. The Kawasaki 450R is the first competition-oriented ATV to include a reverse gear. The lightweight reverse system allows the rider to quickly back out of any on track incident, as well as bottlenecking situations in the woods.
Not only does the KFX450R have a trick high-performance engine and fuel injection system, it also comes with an all-aluminum frame that is lightweight, yet extremely rigid. The front suspension utilizes long lower arms that mount to a narrow single-box section lower frame tube, very similar to the Roll Design and Laeger 250R aftermarket chassis that ruled the motocross tracks not too long ago. The rear suspension uses a cast-aluminum swingarm with linkage, providing the ideal balance of flexibility and rigidity.
The KFX450R bodywork was designed with ease of maintenance in mind, as well as keeping with the aggressive look. The fenders and headlight come off easily for closed-course competition. And the bodywork looks great with or without the headlight. Kawasaki has a full line of authentic Kawasaki accessories available to even further improve the look and performance of your KFX450R. Kawasaki – KFX700
While the new KFX450R may be the flagship sport quad in Kawasaki’s ’09 lineup, it does have a big brother. The KFX700 has been a favorite amongst off-road riders of all skill levels for quite a few years now. The “V Force” combines Kawasaki’s potent 90-degree V-twin engine and an automatic transmission with a racing-style chassis. This combo adds up to a sport quad that can be ridden aggressively all day long. The 697cc engine is matched up to a performance-tuned CVT tranny, eliminating shifting and giving the rider one less thing to concentrate on.

KTM – 525 XC
When the 2008 KTM 525 XC was first released it set a benchmark for stock high-performance ATVs. The machine comes with a high-end chromoly steel frame and a removable aluminum rear sub-frame. The suspension is also extremely adjustable; it features caster- and camber-adjustable A-arms matched up with high-end Ohlins shocks. The steel no-link swing arm also features an adjustable Ohlins PDS shock.
As far as engines go, the KTM 525 XC comes with a scorcher. The electric-start 510cc single overhead cam, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine certainly packs a punch. The engine is matched with a semi-close ratio five-speed transmission with reverse. Unlike most sport quads on the market, the KTM machines all come with a hydraulic Magura wet multi-disc clutch. And feeding fuel to the engine is a 39mm Kehin FCR-MX carb with TPS (throttle positioning sensor).
Other features include the use of Maxxis Razr cross-country tires mounted on Douglas wheels, Magura tapered aluminum handlebars mounted to a four-way adjustable clamp, a stock high-flow performance exhaust, Wave disc brakes, a 520 X-ring chain, and it even comes with a tether kill switch.

KTM – 450 SX
For 2009, KTM is offering two new machines in its lineup-a 450 SX and 505 SX, two motocross-inspired ATVs. The 450 SX shares many common features with its cross-country sibling the 450 XC. The most noticeable differences between the two models at a glance are the 50-inch wide stance, the moto-type Maxxis tire package versus the taller XC rubber, and WP fully adjustable shocks.
As we stated in our first look at this machine earlier this year, the 450’s engine is based on the KTM 450 SX-F dirt bike engine. The engine cases were redesigned with a modified engine ventilation system. This setup accommodates a deep oil sump, which allows for better engine performance and increased oil capacity. Another area of difference is in the carb–the SX version comes with a Keihin FCR-MX 41mm flat slide carburetor with acceleration pump and TPS. A close ratio five-speed transmission was designed with motocross applications in mind, and unlike the cross-country quads, this version doesn’t come with reverse.
Like the other models, the 450 SX comes with caster/camber adjustable suspension, a no-link steel swing arm, Magura tapered aluminum handlebars mounted to a four-way adjustable clamp, Wave disc brakes, a hydraulic clutch, a free-flowing high-performance exhaust, nerf bars, and a 520 X-ring chain.

It outputs almost 19 horsepower and has an automatic CVT transmission to put power to the wheels while making it easy for riders to learn the ropes. Kymco – Mongoose 250
The Mongoose 250 is a sporty quad from Kymco. The 249cc four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine outputs 18 horsepower, and the automatic CVT transmission shifts gears for you. It has a dual A-arm front suspension and a linked rear setup, with 7.25 inches of travel all around, to handle the bumps on the trail. It also features an electric starter, disc brakes all around, and a one-year limited warranty.

Polaris – Outlaw 525 IRS
The Polaris 525 IRS is the first true sport quad ever released with an independent rear suspension. The Outlaw’s rear A-arm suspension is designed to absorb ruts and bumps, keeping power to the ground, as well as allowing for flat cornering and superior control in off-camber situations. The key advantages of IRS on a sport quad are greatly improved ground clearance and a plusher, less abusive ride. The Polaris IRS rear end provides over ten inches of wheel travel and 11.5 inches of ground clearance. All three Outlaw machines utilize a KTM race bred, lightweight, liquid-cooled four-stroke engine, and a 39mm FCR carburetor. To even further aid performance and traction, specially designed Maxxis radial tires are used. The Outlaw IRS uses Fox podium shocks up front and Ryde FX shocks in the rear. Polaris claims this to be the fastest accelerating stock sport quad on the market.
For ’09, the Outlaw received multiple upgrades such as new bodywork, a new and improved seat, single-head improved fasteners, and aluminum heel guards. Through extensive testing with its race program, Polaris has revised the foot peg location and suspension settings. Also gone for ’09 is the Pro-Steering system in favor of a conventional stem and tie-rod setup. The 2009 models will be Indy Red/White.

Polaris – Outlaw 450 MXR

Suzuki – Quadracer R450 (and limited edition)
The QuadRacer LT-R450 is a champion on the racetrack. Suzuki fine-tuned the R450 for 2009 by adjusting the ECU programming and cam profiles to make the engine perform even better at low- and mid-rpm range and also added a new countershaft for improved gear-shift feel. The chassis got updated with Kashima coating on both the front and rear suspension to reduce friction and improve performance, and the settings on the front and rear were updated with larger rear ties and updated swingarm rigidity balance for better handling and shock absorption. The Limited Edition model comes in black with black wheels and a gold frame along with a red version with a black frame and black wheels.
The QuadRacer’s engine, with its new updates, is a force to be reckoned with. The race-proven 450cc is compact, lightweight, and really dishes out the power where and when it counts. The 11.7:1 compression ratio, the titanium valves, and the forged aluminum piston makes plenty of power throughout the rpm range, and one ride will tell you this machine is built to go fast. Its five-speed transmission and fuel injection system work the engine to its full potential.
The R450 was the first sport quad that didn’t require new A-arms to race. The wide front suspension with fully adjustable Kayaba piggyback shocks, with 40mm pistons and 14mm shock rods, give the R a performance edge. The Kayaba rear shock is adjustable for both high- and low-speed compression, rebound, and preload, so it’ll give you a very personalized ride if you know how to adjust it.
Everything from the hydraulic brakes to the large serrated foot pegs was carefully mated to this machine to make it unstoppable on the racetrack. It’s also a lot of fun on the trail if you’re the kind of rider who can’t get enough speed.

Suzuki – Quadsport Z400 (and limited edition)
If you’re feeling sporty, the QuadRacer LT-Z400 just might be what you’re looking for. The 2009 model has an all-new fuel injector system and a 16-bit ECU to improve traction. The Z also got a little body makeover this year to look fast just like its big brother the R450 (it even has a removable headlight). To top it all off, the chassis has been changed to improve handling stability, strength, and performance, and the front track has been widened by 25mm and the foot pegs are now as wide as the ones found on the R450 for better grip. The Limited Edition model comes in red with a black frame and black wheels.

Yamaha – YFZ450R
Yamaha’s all-new YFZ450R is nearly three-inches wider than its YFZ450 predecessor, making it a motocross-ready quad out of the box. The lightweight frame is constructed of aluminum with a tension-steel bottom frame located under the engine to keep the center of gravity low.
With a narrow front frame and long-travel front A-arms, front camber remains very consistent throughout the full range of motion. The Kashima coated KYB front shocks deliver 9.8 inches of preload, high/low-speed compression, and rebound adjustability. Out back, the aluminum swingarm travels 11 inches on a preload, high/low-speed compression, and rebound adjustable KYB shock.
Fuel injection now feeds a brand-new five-valve head that is based on the YFZ450. But, with a new camshaft and a beefed up crankshaft, the engine is built to withstand the additional torque load that delivers all across the rpm range.
Even the throttle, seat, and the handlebars are designed to make the ride more comfortable. The handlebars are four-position adjustable, so you can customize the reach, and the seat is padded for comfort. The throttle is easier to push, so you’ll have less thumb fatigue.
